Obituary for Celine Anna Houde

CELINE ANNA HOUDE
1931 – 2021

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our sister Celine. She passed away peacefully at Tache Centre (ActionMarguerite) on Wednesday, November 24 at the age of 90.

She was predeceased by her father Henri (1950), mother Aldéa (1984), brothers Roland and Alfred Houde, sister Gisèle Schoofs and her stepdad Henri St. Germain. She will be deeply missed by her siblings: Pauline Bouchard, Fleurette Zastre-Tetreault (Earl), Monique Allard (Henri), Emile (Terry) and Julien Houde, many nieces and nephews whom she deeply cherished and the members of ‘Groupe Monde et Espérance’.

The eldest of nine children, Celine journeyed from a little red schoolhouse in Benard, MB, to school in Elie, to l’Academie and College St. Joseph, to the Universities of Manitoba, Montreal and McGill where she obtained a Masters in Education.

Early in life, she was attentive to the Lord’s will. In her desire to respond faithfully to His call to service, in 1958 she became a member of a Secular Institute ‘Groupe Monde et Espérance’ to consecrate her whole life to spreading hope, both at work and in daily living. This spirit of service permeated her career in education in Manitoba and in Quebec: in the classroom, in administration and as catechetical coordinator.

The underprivileged always had a special place in her heart. She welcomed two Laotian families into her home. Celine still found the time to sit on the boards of various organizations that were in tune with her fundamental values of faith, justice and culture. In 1997 she was one of the receptionist of the Caritas Award.

Celine always enjoyed meeting people, listening to music, swimming, reading and travelling. She shad the opportunity of travelling across Canada, parts of the U.S., Yukon, Alaska, Europe, Israel, the Orient, Haïti and Brazil.

Celine was never too busy to listen, to care and to offer her help. Her life is a true testimony of her love for her family, her friends and the underprivileged. Merci Celine!

Celine’s family wish to thank all the staff of Place Despins and ActionMarguerite for their care and compassion during her stay.

In lieu of flowers, Celine would say: “If you so wish, make a donation to a charity of your choice, help someone in need and always be kind.”
