Obituary for Eleanor Carriere

ELEANOR CARRIERE
(nee McCAULEY)

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our Wife, Mother, Sister, Grandmother, Great- Grandmother, Godmother, cousin, and friend who passed away peacefully after all her family had said their goodbyes at Grace Hospital on March 27, 2023.

Eleanor is survived by husband Lawrence, daughter Simone (Terry), grandchildren Jordan, Justin (Teena), great-grandchildren Layla, Zeppelin, Sage, Xander, Denver, Colt, Rubee and many in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.

She was predeceased by her parents George and Charlotte, brother Donald, son Donald, stepson Lars and great granddaughter Rikki.

Beth Eleanor (known by all as Eleanor) was born on October 3, 1934, in South Cypress River, Manitoba. She was welcomed into the world by her parents Leonard and Charlotte McCauley and ‘big’ brother Donald. As a youngster in the country, she participated in various country fairs, was a member of the Boys & Girls club, and an active member of the church. She would often talk of family and friends in the country and the good times she had growing up as a young child. In 1942 the family left the country for a life in the ‘big’ city. They had purchased a family home in the downtown area of Winnipeg where she attended Gordon Bell School. She was encouraged by her mother to be resourceful, outspoken and to stand up for what she believes in (values she later instilled in her own children).

As a young adult, she started working full-time and learned the skill of silk-screening (today known as Graphic Arts). She married her first husband, but the period was brief when she lost him to a boating accident. As a young widow, she met a gentleman named Lawrence, and began dating and became part of his larger family. They were married on Jan 12, 1963, in Winnipeg.

Following their marriage, they packed up their belongings and headed west. Initially settling in Gibson, BC where she became a mother to her first child, a son named Donald. She spent time nurturing and teaching her young son and often commented that motherhood was her dream job. Three years later they moved from the ‘island’ to the mainland settling into a new house in Port Coquitlam, BC and welcomed her second child, a daughter named Simone. Eleanor was in her glory parenting and teaching her children. She was actively involved in all they did.

In 1974, the family found themselves returning to Winnipeg. With her children growing and becoming independent Eleanor decided to return to work and started working as a childcare provider in her home with Child & Family Services. She was once again in her element of teaching and nurturing preschool children. Her special children were Mark, Daryl and Jamie. Years later with her own children grown, Eleanor found herself returning to work out of the home as a Product Demonstrator at Safeway and later Costco working part-time until retiring at the age of 67.

While working part time, Eleanor was once again blessed with children, this time in the form of two grandsons Jordan and Justin. Her motherly instincts and involvement kicked in again, lending a hand by giving them breakfast every morning, getting them off to school, teaching and nurturing as she did with her children years earlier. She was extremely proud of her boys and did not hesitate to pull out her brag book to show off pictures and talk about their latest adventures. No matter the weather, she would pick them up and travel around the city on transit taking them to concerts, plays, shopping, preschool, festivals, gardens, the zoo, museum, and anything else they had desired to participate in. She spent time teaching and sharing her hobbies of knitting, crafting, puzzles, and baking with her boys.

Throughout her life she had created several meaningful and lasting friendships including one dear friend named Laura. With that friendship came a ‘second’ family of children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren that affectionately referred to her as Mrs. C.

Eleanor loved all creatures great and small. Enjoyed a good afternoon/evening of Bingo, travelling with family around the province to various car shows, a day out at Gimli racetrack, celebratory BBQs, and special occasions. Travelling with family out of province to visit her son in BC, shopping in Grand Forks, travelling to the US for vacations with her grandsons, dinosaur parks, water parks and absolutely anything that included family, friends, and a good time.

Eleanor believed strongly in family, community, helping those less fortunate and volunteering for any organization that needed an extra hand. She spent time volunteering with Brooklands Rec Center (from movie night to B-Part Pancake Breakfasts, carnival games and chaperoning on buses for swimming lessons). She was involved in the Brooklands Neighbourhood Improvement Program, Brooklands School, Brooklands Day Care, Brooklands Youth Center and Brooklands Foodbank Program as well as an active member of the Brooklands Active Living center. She also volunteered at Deer Lodge Hospital. Over the years she received numerous Achievement Certificates recognizing her contributions in the community and beyond.

She will be dearly missed, never forgotten and always in our hearts. We love you and miss you Mom, Granny, Great Granny, Auntie Eleanor and Mrs. C

Cremation has already taken place with a celebration of life to be held at a later date. The family request that in lieu of flowers donations be made in Eleanor’s memory to the Brooklands Active Living Centre, 1960 William Avenue, Winnipeg R2R0C4.
