Obituary for Bentti Raymond Tuominen

.

It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of Bentti Raymond Tuominen, on July 25, 2023, at the age of 88. After a short period in Concordia Hospital, he did pass peacefully, with family at his side. He has imparted loving memories upon his family, including his wife Jeanette, children Richard, Rodney (Maureen), and Glynis (Brent), along with his grandchildren Ryan, Eric, Patrick (Megan), Wesley (Chelsey) Zack, Colby and Jesse, his sister Margit, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Jussi “John” and Suoma, and brothers Niilo, Aarno and Raimo.

Bentti was born on February 23, 1935, in Winnipeg Manitoba. He was raised, and lived for many years, in picturesque Pointe du Bois, where he met the love of his life, Jeanette. They married and moved into the bustling city, where he both started, and competed, his life-long career as a successful refrigeration and air-conditioning mechanic. Together they lovingly raised their children in Transcona. Eventually, they built (with the help of extended family) and moved into, their beautiful cottage/“planned” retirement home in Lac du Bonnet. They created many precious memories on the shores of the Winnipeg River. Finally, Bentti did actually retire to a lovely suite, of a centrally located apartment building back in the Transcona area. The suite was situated as such that he could proudly display his Bombers and Jets flags (he was an avid fan), but more importantly keep “neighbourhood watch”!

This strong as an oak, but gentle soul, never failed to stop to converse with anyone, anywhere, of any age. He could fix most anything, dance a mean polka, solve a Cryptoquote in record time, skip a strategic game of curling, and more recently, prepare a mean, grilled cheese sandwich. He was a devoted husband, father/father-in-law, grandfather, brother/brother-in-law and uncle. Many called him “friend”, or “coach”, and a few even adopted him as their great grandfather. Sadly, he will never meet his actual great-grandson to be (of Patrick and lovely Megan). Don’t worry Dad, we have many a story to pass on to the wee one, maybe a Finnish phrase or two, and of course, a few legendary mushy kisses! We know your toes are still a tapping, and you still dream of a steamy sauna in your new, eternal place of rest.

Our Dad expressed to us that upon his passing, he did not want a “big fuss”. He wanted a private cremation to take place with just his wife, children and grandchildren. Please respect his wishes, but feel free to celebrate his life in any way that brings you comfort. We all sincerely thank you for your continued prayers and support. In lieu of any donation, we think our Dad would be happy if you raised a glass of Scotch in tribute to the “Sisu” within all of us.
