Obituary for Asuncion (Siony) Telequen

.

Peacefully, Asuncion passed away after a short illness. She is predeceased by her mother and father, Mary and Patricio, and five siblings. She is survived by her sisters, Angeline and Paulita, whom she loved very much. Asuncion will be deeply missed by her daughter Antonia (Kevin); son Christopher (Kristen); her grandchildren Anna, Hunter, Heidi, Noel, and Evelyn; as well as her many nieces, nephews, friends and relatives here in Canada; in the Philippines; and around the world.

Asuncion was born in Bontoc Mtn. Prov., Philippines and lived in Lapanto, Mankayan before moving to Baguio City when she was fourteen. She later attended St. Louis University for pre-nursing, and finished her RN internship at Baguio General Hospital in April 1966. She then came to Canada in 1968. She arrived in April that year with a group of new nurses to start a new life. Asuncion was a devoted RN and embodied all the tributes of a caring nurse. Nursing was her service on this earth. She worked at Misericordia, Victoria and HSC till 1998 and after that, continued nursing with various nursing agencies and personal care homes. She finally retired for good in 2015.

After her retirement from nursing, she took to a new service and became one of the daily mass attendants and communicants for St. Emile Catholic Church, where she was a parishioner for 35+ years. Asuncion assumed this role until she was too ill to attend. She took great pride in her duties, and rarely missed a day. She was also a proud member of various Catholic organizations such as The Legion of Mary, Handmaids of the Lord, Cenacle 164 Our Lady of Fatima, and ANCOP.

Siony loved to travel and enjoyed her occasional trips to the Philippines, New York and Calgary to visit family. She also journeyed to Jerusalem twice. Her first was in 2013, then again in 2018. Her final trip in March 2023 was to Medjugorje, a pilgrimage which was a long-held dream. While there she climbed Apparition Hill, twice!

Siony was a caring, hard-working single mom, who valued her time with her children when they were growing up. Memories of kite flying, ice skating, sledding, catching frogs, trips to the beach and various local events and destinations; she was always game for just about anything her kids could think of. She was a fun, energetic, and loving mother who knew how to enjoy her time with her children. In her later years she enjoyed baking cookies for her grandchildren. She cherished her grandchildren, and saw them as her greatest blessings.

She lived in the light of the Lord, for this was her one true love that always carried her.
