Obituary for Anka (Anna) Dobrostal

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Anka (Ann) Dobrostal (maiden name Bukvic) on April 3, 2022. Ann was predeceased by her beloved husband Tomo (Tom) Dobrostal and her parents Ivan and Kata Bukvic. She is survived by her children Maria and Frank, her brother Drago Bukvic (Bozica), her niece Marina Watt (Steve) and nephew Dave Bukvic, and extended family in Croatia. Ann is also survived by her friends that became sisters, Ljubica Flaijs and Mara Drpa.

Ann was born in Stari Gradac, Croatia (Yugoslavia) October 9, 1942. She fell in love and married her husband, Tom, when he returned from Canada to visit family in Croatia in 1965. Tom returned to Canada and Ann followed shortly after. Ann got a job as a seamstress in a factory, and in order to speak with her coworkers she learned several languages including English, Polish, and Ukrainian. By all accounts she was very outgoing, kind, and always happy to help anyone who needed it.

Ann and Tom started their family shortly after their marriage and built a life for themselves. Ann loved to garden, especially flowers, and she loved animals. She took pleasure in simple things. Unfortunately, Tom became ill with serious medical issues in the early 1980s and Ann chose to stay home and care for him. Tom passed in 1994. Shortly after his passing Ann was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. She was able to remain in her home which she loved until shortly before her passing.

The family would like to extend their thanks to the nurses and health care aides from Home Care who enabled her to stay home as long as possible. They would also like to thank the staff of the Grace Hospital for their compassionate care in her final days. Special thanks to her Prime Coordinator, Candace Blundell, who was so amazing at optimizing Ann's quality of life. Thank you to Tita Ljubica and Tita Mara for being ongoing supports to Ann. Thank you to Karmen and Lola Flaijs for supporting Maria and Frank. Maria would like to also thank her good friends, Nicole and Rosa, and her coworkers from PSCU for their kindness and support during this difficult time. Frank would like to thank his friends Grant, Rocky, Serena, Randy, and Graham for all of their help during this time. You are all truly appreciated.

Funeral Service will be held on Friday, April 22 at 1:00 p.m. in the Coutu Funeral Chapel, 680 Archibald Street, with viewing one hour prior. Burial will follow the reception at Glen Eden Eden Cemetery.
