Obituary for Amando Cochingyan

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Amando Cochingyan on February 2, 2022 with his family by his side. He was 86 years old. Amando will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 62 years, Yvette; his daughters, Mona (Roland), Denise (Brad) and Alice (Normand); his grandchildren, Jacques (Arisa), Éric (Sandrine), Nicholas, Thomas, Cédric, Émilie, Zacharie, Madeleine and Patrick.

Dad was born in Manila on February 6, 1935. His parents, Jose and Susanna had five children, our father being the youngest son of the family. He grew up in an educated household, one which offered him many enriching experiences throughout his childhood and youth. His memories of the Philippines remained vivid his whole life, and he loved to share stories and anecdotes of that time with those around him.

Dad came to America when he was seventeen years old to study. He attended the University of California at Berkley for two years and then went on to study at the University of Manitoba where he completed a degree in Commerce. He worked at Great West Life Insurance Company for sixteen years, followed by a successful career as a life insurance salesman with the Knights of Columbus.

On August 22, 1959 he married Yvette Alarie of Ste. Agathe, Manitoba. They went on to have three girls whom they raised with great dedication, love and devotion. Mum and dad were a real team. They made sure we had everything we needed so that we felt safe, secure and happy.

Dad’s work really suited him. It gave him the opportunity to meet a wide variety of people which he really enjoyed. This interest in the lives of others permeated his daily life. He always took the time to talk and listen to anyone he might meet.

Dad always went beyond the call of duty to help out in any way possible, which speaks to his generosity towards our family and others in our community. He was always thinking of creative ways to support those he cared about and loved.

For our dad, family always came first. It was his purpose in life, one of his reasons for living. He believed in each and every family member which gave us the courage to go forth in the world and follow our dreams. For him, no pursuit was too lofty to explore, no ambition too grand. He did everything he could for his girls. We in turn try to do the same for our own children. This precious legacy shall live on in the grandchildren. There is no greater gift. Dad, we know you are watching all of us and we shall make you proud.
