Obituary for Allan Leon Prue

Allan Leon Prue, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, passed away quietly, surrounded by love, on his 92nd birthday, July 27, 2023 at Riverview Health Centre in Winnipeg.

Born July 27, 1931 in Tamworth, Ontario, Allan (Al) was a beloved husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle and friend.

Al is survived by his children, son Allan (Bridget), their sons Kenneth (Renee) and Michael (Elyse); son Grant; daughter Janis (Duncan) McDougall; his sister-in-law Lois Prue, his brother-in-law John (Edite) Patterson, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Al was predeceased by his wife Mary (nee Patterson), his brothers Kenneth and Donald, his parents Fred and Alma (Lott).

His many stories of growing up in Tamworth leave us all with the astonishing memories he liked to share with his friends and family. Oh the stories he would tell from his childhood. He joined the army in 1948, where he was a driver/mechanic and paratrooper in RCACS Airborne 1 Platoon. His final army station took him to Rivers, Manitoba where he met his wife, Mary. A year later they made their way to Winnipeg to start a family.

In Winnipeg, he began working in the elevator trade as an elevator mechanic in 1957 and enjoyed a 35 year career. In his early years he worked construction, installing elevators on many of the buildings throughout the city. If you were ever stuck in an elevator, he may have been the guy who rescued you! He was President of the Elevators Constructors Local 102 from 1982-1992. He was awarded the Certificate of Honor and Gold Honorary Card by the International Union of Elevator Constructors for his many years of loyal and faithful membership in the Union.

As he was also recognized as the “go to guy” for fixing and building, it was no surprise that Al and Mary had moved into a new house in Transcona and purchased a small cottage at Grand Beach. He was known to fix, and add, and renovate as fast as Mary could plan the new remodels!

After selling their home in Transcona and eventually selling the cottage, Al and Mary had moved into 55 Nassau Condominiums. He joined the Board of Directors and in 1999 became a Director at Large. Shortly thereafter, he became Vice President until 2013. He helped spearhead many major projects such as the building envelope remediation, window replacements and elevator upgrades, to name a few. His pride and joy, however, was the transformation of the old storage room into a public workshop, giving Residents a place to make repairs and create projects! Al was known as the consummate Condominium Board Member.

His favorite things to do in life were to go on road trips and to buy new red vehicles. He loved to travel and to see where the road would take him. Some favorite road trips were south to Texas and Arizona, along with a few road trips with his adult kids and friends, and even grandkids, which include the west coast, down east (which is what he referred to as Tamworth) and Minneapolis. He was always happy when travelling, and looked forward to heading back home towards Kingston, which always held a special place in his heart.
His family was always there to support him in any and all ways. They were his biggest joy, especially his two grandsons. He always loved having them over to visit when they were small, but particularly enjoyed them as they grew up and visited as adults. He was very proud of all his children and grandchildren. He will be missed by all who knew him.
The family would like to thank: Dr. Drexler, Dr. Hingwala and Dr. Karvelus, for their amazing care of Al. Also, thank you to his last home, River Ridge II as well as Riverview Health Centre.

In keeping with Al’s wishes, cremation has taken place with a private family celebration. Donations can be made at CancerCare Manitoba and/or The Kidney Foundation of Manitoba.
